Today’s Beer:  Sky High Rye from Arcadia Ales.

Ryan is out today, so I had Michelle join me and Shane today.  Sky High Rye is labeled as a Rye Pale Ale.  I had no idea what that meant, but I thought, let’s give ‘er a go.  Turns out the rye/hop combo teamed up for a big flavor right away.  There is a lot going on with this beer.  There’s some citrusy hints with some lemonny things going on, some piney notes, and, at least to me, some big bitterness with the hops and rye tag teamin’ to make it happen.  The mouth feel is medium at best but has a bit of a sticky quality.  It left a bitter filmy vibe in the backc of my throat.  That put me off a bit.

My Rating:  5

Michelle’s Rating: 5.5

Shane’s Rating:  6, but with his food pairing a 7.5

And the food pairing really helped smooth this beer out.  Shane brought in his combo sandwich:  A sausage link covered in italian beef all covered in cheese.  The beef and cheese really help smooth that bitter aftertaste and calm it down, while the sausage adds a bit of a kick at the end.  Really good sandwich.

Over all this is a bold flavored beer.  If you like that with some solid aftertaste, this might be right up your alley, it just wasn’t up mine.
