On Tap 5/16/14: Burnt Caramel American Brown Ale

Rosatis

On Tap is brought to you by Rosati’s Pizza, 701 S. Gregory, Urbana.

Ryan and I went on a beer run to replenish the barren On Tap fridge, and we came upon this nifty looking beer from Clown Shoes Beer.  And the fact that it was nifty looking was 90% of the reason we picked it up.  It’s called Burnt Caramel American Brown Ale.  The label is completely whack-a-do, and we dug it.  Plus, they put 500 pounds of burnt caramel into each batch of this beer, so why wouldn’t we try this.

With so much caramel, we all thought it would be crazy sweet and caramely… but it wasn’t.  I definitely got a solid caramel flavor and so did DJ Squish, but Ryan and Shane weren’t picking it up very much.  As we drank more, a subtle hop finish started to appear.  The hops never became over bearing, just lurked in the background there like your Mom’s brother in all those family Christmas photos… Always there, never the center of attention.  This is definitely a pretty flavorful, complex beer.  DJ Squish put it best when she said it’s a nice middle ground between an IPA and a Stout.

Ratings:

DJ Squish:  7.9

Shane:  6.999999

Ryan:  8.0

Me:  7.0

We all agree this is a really good beer.  You should pick it up.

Now, Shane brought in fettuccini alfredo with some cheesey garlic bread to go with this beer.  He and I both felt the garlic bread actually went a bit better with this beer than the alfredo, but it does work.  Then my wife showed up halfway through with a milkshake, and you know what, that worked great.  Seriously.  Have some ice cream along with this thing.  Or go nuts and make an ice cream/beer float.  You’re an adult.  Put on your big kid clown shoes and make it happen.
